Claudio Abbado, exquisite maestro, is no more. A first appreciation by Norman Lebrecht can be found on this webpage.

"He achieved the highest summit of music in Europe – artistic director of La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic – and stamped each of them with a facet of his principled personality. he was known for leaving jobs early on a point of musical principle. He was, in fact, the first music director of the Berlin Philharmonic to leave the post alive."

Arts head: Mark Tinkler, English Pocket Opera Company
The artistic director sees opera as a learning tool and believes that schools, not hubs, need to be the main deliverer of music education.

In this interesting article in today's Guardian he describes what Pocket Opera is doing in schools and exposes the dearth of music education. He says: "
At the very core of our mission is the belief that music has the power to transform lives and communities." English Pocket Opera Company works with up to 50,000 children a year. (2012 figure)

"Masterpiece"

Here's a chance to hear the Kings Singers performing "Masterpiece", a modest title for a piece with modest pretensions, composed by our Musical Director Paul Drayton. It aims to illustrate the entire history of the last 400 years of Western classical music in about 9 minutes. It really is an amazing piece, expertly executed.

Dulcamara, anyone?

Duchy Opera is currently casting roles for the autumn 2014 performance (in English) of Donizetti's "Elixir of Love", particularly for this Bass/Baritone role. The travelling 'quack', Dr. Dulcamara, arrives unexpectedly at a small town in the Basque country, peddling his bottled cure-of-all-ills to the locals. He is convincing rogue, extrovert and colourful. Contact us for more information.

Added 24/01/2014:
THE ROLE of Dulcamara HAS NOW BEEN ALLOCATED
