The two officers were glad to lend a hand to the Duchy Opera and ‘arrest’ the itinerant quack doctor who is the star of their latest production, Donizetti’s comic opera Elixir of Love.
John Clifton-Griffith and Aaron Bevan felt the collar of Dr Dulcamara, who had promised his magic elixir would also eradicate a variety of ailments including mumps, the hives and whooping cough.
However, on examining the contents and the officers said it appeared to be nothing more than red wine and released Dr Dulcamara in time for the Duchy Opera’s performance next month.
Elixir of Love will be performed at the Mylor Theatre in Truro College on October 29 and 30, St Mary’s Church Penzance on November 1, and Falmouth’s Princess Pavilion on November 2.
